Seismic Behaviour of G+7 RC Open Ground Storey Buildings with Fluid Viscous Dampers
The occurrence of earthquakes may complicate humans livelihood by causing major structural damages, most of the times resulting in loss of life and property. For this purpose, the earthquake-resistant structures have to be built, to lessen the structural damages caused during earthquakes. In this scenario, damping plays a vital role in designing structures resistant to earthquakes. The passive control systems consist of various passive energy dissipating devices such as fluid viscous dampers, viscoelastic dampers and friction dampers which help to control the structural vibrations caused during an earthquake by energy dissipation. The main objective of this paper is to study and analyse the behaviour of G+7 RC open ground storey buildings before and after the application of fluid viscous dampers located in seismic zone IV and V. In this paper, five models are considered, i.e. bare frame building, open ground storey building, open ground storey building with fluid dampers at corner, middle and periphery. Earthquake loads are taken as per IS 1893-2002 code. Response spectrum analysis is carried out for all five building models in ETABS software. Modal analysis is performed, and responses, i.e. time periods, frequencies, base shears, storey shears, storey drifts, storey displacements, storey stiffness of five models are obtained. It is clear that the addition of fluid viscous dampers to the buildings reduced the responses to a great extent in both seismic zones IV and V when compared to the bare frame and open ground storey building.
