Durability and Cover to Reinforcement
The chapter presents the requirements of EC2 to assure the durability of reinforced concrete structures during their design working life, without significant loss of utility or major repair. The protection of the structure is established by considering its intended use, design working life, maintenance program and actions. In reinforced concrete structures, durability is mostly dependent on corrosion protection of steel reinforcements, which is related to density, quality and thickness of concrete cover and concrete cracking. The design working life of a structure shall be guaranteed through suitable requirements to protect each structural element from the relevant environmental actions. The traditional method of calculating the concrete cover according to environmental conditions does not account for all the important factors for the evaluation of durability. Besides environmental exposure classes, cement type, concrete quality (controlled by a/c ratio and drying time) and climatic conditions (temperature, humidity) must be considered, too. At the end of the chapter, some case studies are dedicated to the choice of the minimum strength class of concrete and the evaluation of concrete cover for common structural elements.
