Ductile Detailing Practices Using Confined Masonry—A Case Study of Himachal Pradesh
Structural detailing of even small houses needs special attention in regions of high seismic zones. The challenge of keeping abreast with the changing requirements of Indian codes and training and updating construction workers at site becomes a daunting task when they are set in their ways. The case study of Himachal Pradesh which lies entirely in high seismic zones IV and V is presented with special focus on confined masonry. Unlike regular framed structure, confined masonry is a construction system where the walls are built first, and the columns and beams are poured in afterward to enclose the wall and provide for much needed seismic resistance in high seismic zones. The furtherance of confined masonry practices in Himachal Pradesh and non-compliance of standard masonry construction with ductile detailing standards is presented. The steps taken by the state government under the auspices of Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) in educating the masons on safer construction of confined masonry walls and correct detailing practices are discussed. The suitability of new bricks/blocks available commercially and its suitability as an infill material for confined masonry are outlined.
