Smart Villages – Indian Realities, Opportunities and Way Forward
With its large population, vast geography, demographic, linguistic and cultural diversity and thousands of years of civilizational history, India presents an excellent mosaic for understanding the realities and opportunities for the development of smart villages. This chapter describes the realities of Indian villages, identifies the opportunities for their development as smart villages and recommends a way forward so that both the villages and the country can progress. Detailed data about Indian agriculture, income levels of Indians etc.are described. Key elements of PURA are given. Also described how it has not been implemented well. The new Rurban mission is described and also how many key components of PURA, and many other new smart features can be inroduced, with specfic examples. Very innovative enterprises which have started are described to give many concrete ideas for startups and investors. Need for changes in governance systems and incentives to attract investment including FDI are given. These solutions include addressing well being of slum dwellers and those who live by circular migration.On the whole there are real possibilities for Indian villages to have their identities even while connected to global economy and knowledge systems. Almost all modern technologies from satellites, smart phones, GIS, manufacturing to health services to financial technologies have a role to play.
