Critical Thinking and Graphic Action
The action of drawing is inherent to the human being. Drawing is our primal way of expression, even prior to the speech. Drawing is, therefore, a powerful means of communication and beyond that, it is a fundamental tool of discovery and exploration of the world around us.
Drawing allows us not only to discover the world, but to analyze it and apprehend it, to decompose it and even to create new realities out of those pieces. Finally, through drawing, we can communicate these new emerging realities and express them in the most appropriate way, closing the loop from drawing as an expression of the individual to an expression of the individual’s creation. This circle can be easily replicated in the teaching of architectural drawing, drawing to design. In this article, we analyze the process from the original drawing of pure expression, to the drawing of knowledge and learning, the analytical and interpretive drawing and, finally, the propositional drawing as a creative and thinking tool, closing the circle with the drawing of creative communication. The entire process leads us to conclude that the drawing is a form of language, that requires the previous learning of a code. Once acquired it, there is a possibility of decomposing it and constantly reinterpreting it.
