Design and Analysis of Pancake with Different Pitch Coil Heat Exchanger for Low-Grade Heat Recovery
The practice of reutilizing captured low-grade heat or waste heat in the form of a gas or liquid, is known as “heat recovery,”. It is essential for long-term sustainability and energy conservation. Various methods are employed to recover low-grade heat or secondary heat depending on the temperature of the available heat. This study investigates how to recover waste heat in power plants and from several manufacturing and industrial processes, including the food, textile, HVAC, and chemical sectors, utilizing a shell and pancake heat exchanger with coils of varying pitch. The pancake-type tube heat exchanger is particularly effective in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of low-grade heat recovery. This work focuses on the pancake-type tube heat exchanger’s design and analysis, including how it helps to reduce the unit’s size when compared to a standard shell-and-tube heat exchanger operating at a higher thermal load. A novel pancake design with different pitch sizes was used in the experiment to maximize the heat transfer area of the hot fluid side and extract the maximum amount of heat. The design consisted of a shell for the hot fluid and pancake tubes with different pitch sizes for the cold fluid.
