Performance of Plantain Fibre in Nutmeg Shell Concrete
This experimental investigation aims at producing plantain fibre reinforced nutmeg shell concrete. Nutmeg shells are the waste products from the agricultural industry obtained after picking out the seed inside and plantain fibres are the fibres obtained from the pseudostem of banana leftover to decompose. Engineering properties of nutmeg shells were studied and the plantain fibres were treated using alkali for roughening the structure and thereby to improve mechanical bonding with the concrete. The concrete mixes were casted by replacing fine aggregate by 50% and plantain fibres were added to this mix in varying percentages. The results revealed that optimum fibre to cement percentage is 0.25%. The peak flexural strength was 21.4% more than the control mix. This shows that the use of plantain fibre in concrete seems to be a feasible option to produce fibre reinforced concrete.
