Keeping Cool Under the Hot Arewa Sun: Natural Cooling Systems in Traditional Hausa Architecture of Nigeria
Hausa traditional architecture is the vernacular building style for the North of Nigeria. The style cuts across several ethnic groups and cultures. However, the effect of climate proves the most dominant factor affecting cooling and ventilation solutions, as the traditional architectural style remains similar across the region despite the difference in cultures. The approach to cooling and ventilation in a composite hot dry and hot humid region includes solutions in building materials, openings, room configurations, and orientation. This chapter compares between traditional and more contemporary approaches and recommends simulated solutions that combines the strength of traditional methods to contemporary buildings that are gaining popularity in the North of Nigeria.
