Seismic Performance of Floor Diaphragm Openings in Multi Storey Building
Diaphragms, which transmit lateral forces to the vertical elements of the lateral force resisting system, are to be built as part of the seismic force resisting system of the building. Opening in the floor diaphragms are common for many purposes such as stair cases, escalators, lifts, architectural lighting, etc. These diaphragm openings cause stresses to discontinuous joints with building elements. Diaphragm openings, if unaccounted for may potentially lead to structural instability or possible diaphragm failure. Correct positioning of openings will give the structure effective strength and serviceability. This study focuses on the general effects of floor diaphragm openings on seismic response of RC multistoried building having diaphragm openings of various shapes and aims to find out the optimum shape. The effect of opening shape in the diaphragm is studied using model properties such as maximum storey displacement, storey drift, and storey shear of the building by time history analysis using ETABS 2018 software, and the optimum opening shape is finalized. Effects of diaphragm openings in asymmetric buildings with plan irregularities are also considered.
