Between Technology and Ornament in Contemporary Building Envelope
The ornament has been present continuously throughout the long history of architecture. Principles of sustainability and energy efficiency, expanding dimensions of certain typological groups of buildings (the phenomenon of “bigness”), the need to control daylight and thermal comfort in buildings, as well as increasingly advanced technologies and materials, make the ornament, which has now become more of a structural character, an indispensable element in contemporary architecture. This paper suggests the evolution and generation of different factors which explain reasons for ornament resilience in contemporary architecture, pointing to the close connection between the structural nature of ornament, energy efficiency and application of modern technologies (double skin, PTFE, kinetic, interactive, tensile, media, homeostatic, green facades, etc.).
