Effects of Shear Wave Velocity Uncertainties on the Geotechnical and Geophysical Analysis of an Urban Site (Oran, Algeria)
Soil properties show high heterogeneity at different spatial scales and their precise characterization remains a crucial challenge, especially over large areas. Among these properties, the averaged shear wave velocity constitutes a principal geotechnical soil property for site response analysis. The aim of this study is to quantify the impact of different types of uncertainties (epistemic and aleatory) that arise from the shear wave velocity estimation method on the spatial variability of this parameter. Thus, several methods to pass from a field of point resistance values (from penetrometer tests) to a field of shear wave velocities are compared, varying mainly in how the empirical relationship between these quantities is applied. The application of this concept consists to establish of a shear wave velocity distribution map through a geotechnical study of Oran city (Algeria) in order to highlight the soft soils where a greater amplification of the seismic force occurs. The analysis allows classifying the soils according to the RPA-99 (national seismic code) and Eurocode 8 (European seismic code) classification and their seismic behavior. The results of the present study show that, the presence of epistemic uncertainties in the used model can greatly influence the shear wave velocity value. These uncertainties are due mainly to the way in which each method determined.
