Discussion of construction standards
The limiting state calculation of tunnel linings
Conclusions 1. The calculation procedure for limiting states emphasizes the part played by the rock as a load-carrying member in the lining-rock system, thus using the load-carrying capacity of the rock to a greater extent and dispensing with the need for calculating the lining for strength in the majority of cases. 2. The big saving in constructing linings designed by the new procedure is due to the fact that they are usually designed only to the third limiting state (crack resistance and crack opening). Lower safety factors are then assumed and plastic deformation of the concrete and reinforced-concrete linings are also considered (the calculation is carried out for average rather than maximum stress). 3. Calculation for crack opening permits the recommendation of the new section SNiP II-I,14-69, regarding cracks being tolerable in the central and off-center tensioned members under pressure, to be accepted, and much thinner concrete and reinforced-concrete linings can be designed without adversely affecting the working properties.
