Improving the Progressive Collapse Resistance of Steel Moment Frames Using Different Beam Strengthening Methods
The effect of different strengthening methods of beams on improving the progressive collapse performance of steel moment-resisting frames was assessed through the nonlinear static alternate path method recommended in the Unified Facilities Criteria guideline. Proposed strengthening methods, including strengthening of surrounding beams and strengthening of all beams, in one story or multiple stories with the distinct size of the beams, were used for external and internal column loss scenarios. The progressive collapse performance of strengthened models was compared to the common local strengthening method of the beams of those bays adjacent to the removed column. Also, the seismic response of models was evaluated after applying proposed strengthening schemes through pushover analyses. Finally, the most applicable and effective strengthening method was recommended for each column removal scenario. The obtained results showed that using proposed strengthening methods of beams for improving the progressive collapse resistance of steel moment frames is a simple and effective technique that also led to the more appropriate seismic response. It was found that strengthening of surrounding beams in the highest story is an applicable and cost-effective method for improving progressive collapse resistance in all perimeter column removal scenarios, and strengthening of all beams in the highest story is recommended for improving the progressive collapse performance of the structure in all column loss scenarios. In the cases in which one story strengthening may cause the development of the weak column–strong beam mechanism of collapse, multiple story schemes are brought forward. Also, the assessment of the models with different heights, distinct numbers, and lengths of bays showed that the proposed method could employ in the moment-resisting frames with different geometries.
