Shape Optimal Design of Axisymmetric Shell Structures
Abstract In this section the sensitivity analysis for the optimization of axisymmetric shells subjected to static and dynamic constraints is presented. Thickness and shape design variables are considered. The model is based on a two node frustum conical finite element based on Love-Kirchhoff assumptions. The objective of the design is the minimization of the volume of the shell material or the maximization of the fundamental natural frequency or the minimization of the maximum stresses. The constraint functions are the displacements, stresses, enclosed volume of the structure, volume of shell material or the natural frequency of a specified mode shape. The sensitivities are calculated by analytical, semi-analytical and global finite difference techniques. The efficiency and accuracy of the models developed are discussed with reference to the applications.
