A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Setting the Scene
In order to understand the current environment of rural communities around the world, and to develop solutions for them, it is necessary to understand how we got here, by taking a quick scramble through the ages and pages of history. Both urban and rural communities, i.e. cities and villages, that we see now are a product of continuous biological, historical, economic and social human evolution. In this chapter, the authors describe some of the ancient civilizations, the more recent colonial occupations that resulted in people from different geographical regions discovering and influencing each other, and the industrial and post-industrial revolutions that saw tremendous quality of life changes in human beings, as well as growing disparity among them. Initiatives such as smart villages give us hope that the disparity currently playing out in the form of a global urban-rural divide can be reduced if not eliminated.
