Regenerative Wellbeing Economies for Sustainable Cities
This chapter explores the capacity of cities to co-create sustainable wealth, offer the highest quality of life to all and orchestrate the world economy in harmony with the planet. Cities are hives of cross-pollination on a global chessboard, the places where many diverse economic flows interact and can be converted and intensified to better satisfy the expectations of citizens, business and organisations. Their competitiveness depends on the sustainability dimensions of the economic models, such as the circular economy, the dynamism of stakeholders, the strength of their functions, their links and networks, and their multiplier effects. Sustainable investments can help reconcile cities with people and the planet, while the advent of the human-centred Industry 5.0 promises many leaps forward.
The chapter sheds light on the burgeoning post-Covid-19 human economy. Generating and capturing synergies and bringing forth sustainability principles are cardinal for co-creating better assets, often out of liabilities, and services truly fulfilling citizen essential needs in their valued areas. Responsible businesses and financial institutions have a great potential towards an increasingly zero-waste, post-carbon circular economy and sustainable value from ethical citizen and enterprise values. Cities and businesses started considering wellbeing at the heart of their activity and now try to improve their performance in the race to zero.
