A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Abstract The careful study of local conditions related to wave trains and the drift forces they can exert on ships, where and when sudden changes in direction and magnitude of currents are likely to occur, and where and when wind gusts can affect manoeuvring are suggested as ways to improve berthing operations. The long heavy mooring ropes in use require two men for their handling. The use of remotely controlled launches, instead of manned mooring launches, is therefore suggested for the passing of mooring lines from shore to ship, instead of from ship to shore.
