Design aids for special-shaped reinforced concrete columns subjected to biaxial bending
A column is a fundamental component of any structure. Due to the risk of catastrophic collapse and the comparably low cost of additional load-bearing capabilities, it was found that, taking all loading scenarios into consideration, comparatively higher dimensions are used than actually necessary. However, considerable cost savings can be realized if the column's cross section is correctly adjusted to comply with the requirements. In this view, the use of special-shaped reinforced concrete columns (SSCs) is ground-breaking. The current research presents a simplified method for designing SSC columns subjected to biaxial bending. The axial load-bending moment interaction diagrams are developed for special-shaped columns using equilibrium and strain compatibility concepts. Computer analysis software is used to validate the accuracy of the proposed charts.
