Survey of Seismic Repair to School Gymnasium Damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake
In Japan, buildings damaged by earthquakes are generally repaired for emergency or permanent restoration without necessarily being reconstructed. However, the overview of actual seismic repairs from the immediate aftermath of the damage to repair is often unclear. For rapid restoration, it is necessary to select a repair method that responds to the damage, including factors such as construction cost and construction period.
A survey was conducted to clarify the seismic repair methods, construction cost, and construction period for school gymnasiums that were thoroughly investigated after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan to ensure accuracy of information on actual seismic repairs. Both the immediate post-damage state of the damaged building and the state of its continuous use after repairs were investigated through on-site surveys. The actual state of seismic repairs was then examined in terms of construction cost and period.
As a result, it was found that the repair method correlated with the level of the damage and that the construction cost for repair was related to the extent of the damage and the repair method. In case of severely damaged column bases, reconstruction was often chosen due to difficulties with repair. Since the construction cost depends on the extent of damage and the difficulty of seismic repair, it becomes clear that limiting the damage to structural members which can be easily repaired is effective for rapid earthquake restoration.
