Asphalt Mixtures
Abstract The focus of this chapter is to combine the different asphalt mixture constituents and discuss the typical approaches used to design an asphalt mixture. The chapter discusses the methods that are used to prepare mixture specimens in a laboratory environment, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. The chapter also presents a generic approach to designing an asphalt mixture. Mixture volumetrics are used as the simplest measure for mixture quality and a predictor. Examples of common methods such as the Marshall and Superpave volumetric mixture design are also presented. The use of laboratory tests to evaluate mixture performance is discussed.
