Numerical Optimization of Settlement in Geogrid Reinforced Landfill Clay Cover Barriers
Landfill clay cover barriers are prone to differential settlement, as a result of which the hydraulic conductivity of the barrier increases, thus increasing the amount of water which comes in contact with the waste. This could lead to the development of profuse amount of leachate, which is highly detrimental to the environment. Geogrid reinforcement of landfill cover can be a low cost and highly efficient way of bolstering the shear strength of the cover soil. Such reinforced barriers require computation of settlement response before designing the structure, so as to ensure that the post-construction operations of the landfill can be assessed effectively. For this purpose, triaxial compression tests on geogrid reinforced landfill clay cover barrier were conducted and different parameters such as geogrid properties like tensile strength, tensile modulus and geogrid placement parameters such as number of geogrid layers were tested. Results of the triaxial tests were then used for computation of the elasticity modulus of the soil cover barrier, and a statistical multiple regression model was fitted for different parameters. The regression analysis was performed in R studio. The model with the confidence level of 95% or greater was suggested for computation of settlement in geogrid reinforced landfill covers.
