A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Unmasking Invisible Infrastructure Systems with UAVs
While many urban infrastructure systems are obvious (e.g., roads, utility poles), others are more obscured. These subsurface infrastructure systems include electricity, cable, water, sewer, gas, and irrigation. This chapter aims to unmask subsurface infrastructure systems and identify future excavation activities using data from unmanned aerial vehicles. Specifically, we utilize high-resolution digital orthophotography combined with tactical fieldwork to identify locator marks and their associated subsurface systems to track/monitor urban infrastructure projects without accessing the municipal permit system or interfacing with public/private infrastructure providers or their subcontractors. We conclude by discussing the implications of UAV technologies for anticipating neighborhood disruptions and potential long-term disamenities for residents.
