A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Geocell-Reinforced Foundations
A variety of ground improvement techniques, notably vertical drains, grouting, soil replacement, geosynthetic reinforcement, and piling have been developed to solve the problems. Among these techniques, geocell-reinforced soil offers economy, ease of installation, performance and reliability in many areas of geotechnical engineering. Many Researchers investigated the beneficial ability of geocells to improve the bearing capacity and settlement of footings. They found that the effectiveness of the reinforcement depends not only on the adequate load transmission to the fill material (via friction and interlocking) but also on the stiffness of the reinforcement. Therefore, a framework of practical and reliable design methods and specifications of geocell reinforcement for foundation applications are still required. In this regard, this chapter is presented to cover all the aspects of geocell-reinforced foundation, including failure mechanisms, equating the bearing capacity of geocell-reinforced soils, the contributory factors and scale effects on the response of geocell-reinforced soils. Finally, the performances of geocell and planar reinforcements are compared.
