Resilience of Steel Office Buildings to Mainshock-Aftershock Events
Historically earthquake mainshock-aftershock events have caused substantial damage to the built environment, undermined life safety, and resulted in major socio-economic losses. Different factors determine level of recovery that can be achieved following mainshock-aftershock sequences. To date, no studies have been conducted to assess the recovery and resilience of steel buildings subjected to these sequential events. In this study, the seismic performance of a typical three-floor semi-rigid steel office building, exposed to mainshock and mainshock-aftershock ground earthquakes is evaluated. Once the damage is estimated, social and economic losses are quantified to determine the functionality and recovery status of the building. A stochastic semi-Markov chain process is used to calculate the repair trajectory and the associated resilience. The results highlight the impact of aftershocks on building damage, losses, and repair.
