Study of the stress-strain state in the sub-rectangular tunnel
The circular tunnel shape is the most popularly used in the world, because of its high stability to withstand the overburden material. However, the useful area ratio on the internal cross-sectional area is small. While this ratio of the rectangular tunnel is high. Therefore, the authors combined the advantages of circles and rectangles tunnel into a new shape – sub-rectangular. This paper intends to study the subrectangular profile using the PLAXIS 2D software to model the shape of the tunnel. As a result, the bending moments and normal forces in the sub-rectangular tunnel appear to be 6.5 and 1.023 times higher than that in the commonly used circular tunnel, respectively. The results of the model are also showing that the subrectangular tunnel’s structure is still stable. With the same clearance profile, the circular tunnel’s area appears to be 1.25 times higher than that of the sub-rectangular tunnel area.
