Natural Light in Architecture: Use Inspired by the Constructive Tradition
Abstract This paper is centred around the subject of natural light and its applications in architecture. Solar light has always played an influential role among traditional construction techniques, to the extent that it is regarded as one of the invariant materials in the art of building. As a case study, we put forward the analysis of the solar light in a typical farm of the Sicilian vernacular architecture. In this building, it has been possible to collect data on the natural light captured inside the individual rooms, each single day of the year. Inspired by the nature, the current experimentation of “transparent building envelopes” has allowed to convey daylight, by adjusting the dimensions of both openings and obstructions, thus making these systems progressively more innovative and enabling them not only to capture natural light, but also to produce energy for men and for daily needs.
