Norwegian Experience with Zinc Thermal Spraying for Bridges
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has specified thermally sprayed zinc (TSZ) duplex coatings on their steel bridges in coastal environments since about 1965, and in all environments since 1977. Coating condition on 61 large steel bridges with TSZ duplex coatings built before 1995 was investigated to evaluate the performance. Coating lifetime, defined as time to first major maintenance, was found to depend on corrosivity, as expected. Based on coating condition and age, TSZ duplex coatings are expected to last the design life of the bridges (100 years) in C2 environments. With increasing corrosivity, the coating lifetime decreased, and in C5 environment it was about 25 years. The paint system used on the bridges was based on alkyd binder. With the introduction of modern paint systems based on epoxy and polyurethanes, we expect the lifetime of the coatings to increase. A comparison the paint systems with zinc rich primers showed that the duplex coatings give significantly longer lifetime, and therefore also lower maintenance costs.
