Provision of reliability of earth dams
Conclusions 1. For high-quality performance of all types of main works on the construction of earth and earth-rock dams the construction sites should be equipped with construction machines which make it possible to place the earth materials without their segregation, to compact them to the prescribed density (especially at places where the dam joins the canyon walls), to treat the compacted soil layer, and other operations. 2. To increase the requirements imposed on quality control of the construction of earth dams to obtain the designated geotechnical characteristics. To continue the development of effective methods of field control of the quality of placing earth materials begun by the research department of Gidroproekt. 3. To develop the technological designs of earth dams for regions of high seismic activity, for specific objects of the Far North and Siberia, and also for dams and embankments on weak clay foundations. Further development of a method of calculating dams for static and dynamic loads. 4. To take into account the existing suggestions with respect to increasing the requirements imposed on reliability of dams in the new edition of the construction specifications and regulations SNiP II 53–73 being compiled by the All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Gidroproekt. 5. To organize at all operating high dams and those under construction effective monitoring of their state and to create automated systems monitoring and observing the state of the dams.
