A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Abstract Transport is a network industry and service and an engine and catalyst of growth and prosperity. It has vital links with all dimensions of sustainable development, but it experiences problems to be on a sustainability path. This chapter offers an insight into urban mobility and accessibility patterns and models and the challenges for profound change. The car is still by far the dominant transport mode in cities even though its supremacy is being challenged and citizens are asking for better transport services. Urban arteries often get blocked by traffic, pollution and emissions and may lead to urban thrombosis and asphyxia if a better balance between individual and collective transport is not urgently struck.
