Application of Alternate Waste Materials as Barrier Material in Engineered Landfills
Various waste materials generated as a by-product of thermal power stations, water treatment units, wood processing and paper industry, cement manufacturing, tyre manufacturing units, mining activities, etc. have been investigated upon for beneficial applications to serve as a barrier material for liners and covers in landfills in conjunction with the conventional materials of clayey soils and geosynthetic elements. This paper includes a review of geotechnical properties and environmental impact of various waste materials adjudging their applicability with the use of certain admixtures for use as a barrier material in engineered landfills thus adhering to the huge disposal issues posed by them as well. On the whole, several waste materials were adjudged to be appropriate for use as barrier materials considering the technical requirements; however, the leaching of hazardous contaminants emanating out of certain materials is a concern which may require further detailed investigations.
