Laser Treatment for Adhesive Bonding in Coated Steels
Abstract Zinc coated steel sheet in the form of both temper rolled galvanized and galvanneal are used extensively in the automotive industry. Through a process of excimer laser surface treatment, we have succeeded in significantly enhancing the adhesion characteristics of the coated steel. Preliminary adhesion strength testing has been carried out in the form of simple T peel tests, using a hot melt nylon resin as the adhesive. In some cases, well over a two fold improvement over the untreated parent material has been observed. SEM micrographs indicate a wide range of new surface morphologies strongly dependent on both parent material and processing conditions. Adhesion strength vs. process parameters is discussed and potential trends for optimization of the treatment are indicated.
