Eco-industrial Parks: An Urban Transformation Approach Toward Sustainable Development
With Special Reference to the Egyptian Experience
Industrial practices are playing important role within the attempts for cities’ development as industrialization achieve economic growth and prosperity in both developed and developing countries. However, industrialization causes significant environmental problems and leads to severe destructions like air and water pollution, traffic congestion, and waste disposal difficulties. This increasing rate of environmental declines cannot be controlled with the existing industrial and environmental policies, and thus new industrial approaches are needed helping the countries face the challenges to the sustainable development as per Goal 9 in the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Therefore, introducing new industrial approach to be compatible with the eco-system, minimizing the waste and using nonrenewable resources is necessary. That’s why eco-industrial development projects appeared and now UNIDO and the World Bank Group are supporting governments and practitioners to develop the eco-industrial parks projects. Eco-industrial parks have been known adopting the strategies “environmental restoration—regional integration—sustainable development” and saving the balance between treating the pollution and seeking development opportunities. These parks have the ability to transform the traditional model of industrial parks into more sustainable forms of development. This urban industrial transformation is crucial for resource-based cities because the eco-industrial park development aims to embed industries in society through the creation of shared economic opportunities, improved ecosystems, and innovative paths for business practices. The paper aims to assess the urban transformation principles of the eco-industrial parks in light of the sustainable development and how the Egyptian experience can use this template achieving the Eco industrial parks.
