Pseudopotentials and Dynamical Properties of Metallic Surfaces
Abstract In the last few years it has become possible to measure the dispersion of the surface phonons in the low-index metal surfaces by experimental techniques such as the inelastic scattering of surface atoms [1–4] or the high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy [5–8]. The experimental data have been interpreted using empirical force constant models obtained from a fit to the bulk phonon spectrum [9–12]. This theoretical work has clearly shown that in many cases the force constants must be modified near the surface, in order to reproduce the experimental data. The modifications have been attributed to relaxation or other geometrical changes in the near surface region [13] or to the different configuration of the valence electrons in the outermost planes [14].
