A Brief Review of Inclusions in Al Deoxidized Steel
Control of inclusions is a very hot topic in recent decades in steelmaking field because of the important influences of inclusions on the production, fabrication and performances of steels. However, inclusions cannot be avoided because steelmaking process is featured by intensive using of oxygen. As a result, how to remove inclusions from steel as much as possible is always a crucial task of steelmakers. However, inclusions cannot be completely removed from steel. So, natures of the remained inclusions must be strictly controlled, including the sizes, chemistry, morphologies and so on. At present, commercial steel grades can be roughly divided into three types by the choices of deoxidation in steelmaking. Most of the commercial steel grades is either with Al deoxidation or Si deoxidation, while only a few of them is with other deoxidation method such as Si–Al complex deoxidation. Because of wide application of Al as the deoxidant, how to control inclusions in Al-deoxidized steels is significant in both research and industrial production. In this chapter, control of inclusions is briefly reviewed and emphasis is put to Al deoxidize steels.
