Keynote Lecture: Considerations in the Design of Piles in Soft Rock
Commonly, piles are constructed to embed relatively short distances into rock in order to provide high axial capacity, and may either be driven into the rock or cast as a rock socket. In other situations, however, cast in situ piles are constructed entirely in soft rock, which then provides both lateral and axial resistance. Drawing on recent project work, this paper explores various aspects of the design of piles embedded in soft rock. These include the assessment of rock properties for pile design, the effect of different construction methods and techniques to optimise pile performance, axial load transfer parameters and the effects of strain softening and cyclic loading, and finally analysis approaches for lateral pile response in rock including allowance for brittle failure in the surrounding rock.
