Dwelling in Decay: Analysing the Spatio-Psychological Paradigm of Dilapidated Dwellings in Kolkata
Among various contrasting urban ecological issues in North and South Kolkata, the old dilapidated colonial buildings, belonging to the school of Bengal Baroque, and categorised as Class III Heritage building, are now of great concern for their existential crisis. Emergence of Old Core Space and New Peripheral Space dichotomy in the city also aggravates this condition. The decadence in central city becomes evident from the frequent collapse of these dilapidated buildings. But the residents, puzzlingly, still prefer to stay in those houses even after occurrences of several accidental deaths, mostly due to their intense involvements in various local urban ecological aspects. Urban renewal strategies have become confined within superficial upgradation of the cityscape without addressing the socio-economic crisis of the city. In this context, an attempt has been made to analyse the spatio-temporal variations in the existence of dilapidated houses, to provide an overview of the actual structural conditions through Dilapidation Index, to critically assess the perspectives of the residents of these buildings through behavioural analysis and finally to identify some possible reconstruction methods for developing a holistic inner city renewal and redevelopment plan.
