The Optimization of Civil Engineering Networks
Abstract This paper describes similarities in the system mathematical models of water supply networks and structural trusses, showing that both are examples of a general class of non-linear engineering networks. Comparisons are made between the two networks in respect of constitutive equations, methods of analysis, optimum design and reliability-based design. The similarities are valuable at a teaching level in unifying the study of engineering networks. The differences point the way to interesting areas of research.
