Retrofitting welded flange plate moment connection with rib reinforcing
Abstract This paper presents the behavior of the flange rib moment connections in steel moment frames by finite element method. It is demonstrated that seismic behavior of such moment frames can be improved by adding vertical ribs to beam to column joints. In the proposed design procedure, a strengthening plate is used to reinforce the connection, which imposes the plastic hinge away from the connection with no adverse effect on the panel zone. Thus, influence of the pertinent parameters affecting the behavior of the connection is investigated. The results indicate that this connection provides enough ductility and resistance with reasonable rotational capacity.
