Experimental Investigation of Reinforced Slopes’ Response, to Increased Surcharge Load, with the Use of Optic Fibre Sensors
Abstract In recent years, the use and interest on instrumentation and monitoring to assess the performance of man-made slopes, such as cuttings or embankments, along linear transportation networks, is increasing. An effective approach towards the assessment and identification of precursor signs of incipient failure, is therefore necessary to be implemented. The rationale behind this study is to investigate the feasibility of the use of fiber optic sensing technique to monitor strain in geosynthetic reinforced slopes, by developing and testing a small scale surcharge loaded physical model. To this end, fibre Bragg grating optic sensors are embedded in a reduced scale physical model, and surcharge loads are applied into the crest of the slope, following steps, while the fibre Bragg grating sensors are installed to monitor slope performance. According to obtained results, abnormal strain coincides with zones of increasing surcharge load and localized critical conditions.
