Understanding Speciation and Leaching of Heavy Metals from a Polluted Site, Surat, Gujarat
Abstract In this study, two contaminated soils were collected from a polluted site to analyse the distribution of heavy metals. To understand the speciation of heavy metals, five step sequential extraction method was conducted to determine fractions: (1) easily exchangeable, (2) carbonate bound, (3) Fe-Mn oxides bound, (4) organic bound, and (5) residual fractions. It is observed from the results that the heavy metals in the easily exchangeable forms are very low, whereas in the residual phase they are very high, particularly zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr). Mineralogical and morphological studies of the soils was also carried out to examine the composition and morphology of the soils using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and the results identify the presence of clay minerals and heavy metals. This study shows that the speciation and remediation of heavy metals in the soils depends on the site specific soil conditions and this should be carefully considered in the selection of remedial measures.
