Influencing Factors in the Design of Smart Homes for Persons with Disabilities
This paper discusses factors that influenced our approach to the design of advanced smart homes for persons with unique disability needs. Our project was formed to address the needs of veterans with disabilities; however we believe the knowledge gained is applicable more broadly to the aging population and other persons with disabilities. In this paper, we discuss components in the smart home design context and key features of our approach. We also identify challenges observed in the design process and offer several recommendations to streamline the process for future initiatives.
