Decoding the Ways to Measure Sustainability and Life Cycle Thinking
This book focuses on measuring sustainable initiatives and environmental impacts. The concept of life cycle thinking is useful in considering the production and use of materials in distinct stages: extraction of raw materials, manufacturing, use, and end of life. The stage a product is in contributes to what sustainable impacts can be measured. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a methodology for accounting for impacts over a product’s life. The assessment requires goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory, life cycle impact assessment, and interpretation. As life cycle assessment becomes more broadly and consistently utilized across building materials and sectors, it may enable easier comparison between individual materials for their environmental impacts.
