Ergonomic Assessment of Postural Loads in Small- and Medium-Scale Foundry Units
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) caused due to awkward postures, repetitive motions and handling of loads are the most common ergonomic issues in manufacturing industry. This paper reports the outcome of the ergonomic evaluation of postural loads in small- and medium-scale foundry units using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) techniques. A total of 105 subjects from small- and medium-scale foundry units in western Maharashtra region of India were assessed, and a database was created. REBA analysis is done manually using photographs, and RULA analysis is done using DELMIA-V5 software. The study population is categorized in four departments, and both REBA and RULA analyses indicate that activities from melting and pouring department are at high risk and need immediate intervention. It is found that, in foundry context, the percentage of perfect agreement between REBA and RULA is 75.24%. Suggestions for interventions based on the principles of safety and ergonomics are given. Workers are to be trained to follow the principles of safety and ergonomics during their work to avoid injuries and discomfort due to WMSDs.
