Earthquake Risk Mitigation – The Global Challenge
Abstract Although not yet ended, it is already clear that the present decade is going to be worse than perhaps any in the last century in terms of earthquake casualties. The cumulative death toll from the events of this decade, including Bhuj, 2001, Bam, 2003, South Asia 2004, Pakistan, 2005 and Wenchuan 2008 already exceeds 520,0001. And while earthquake death tolls are the most clearly observable measure of the impact of an earthquake, the accompanying physical damage and economic losses in each of those events, all of which occurred in relatively poor regions of the world, has had a devastating impact on the progress of economic development in the affected areas.
