Analysis and Design of Elastic/Softening Truss Structures Based on a Mixed-Form Extremum Principle
Abstract An extremum principle is presented for structural analysis problems expressed in mixed (stress and deformation) form. The structural model, exemplified for trussed structures, has each member composed of elements coupled in parallel. This type of formulation is convenient for the analysis of systems made up at least partially of materials with stress-limited capacity; element-wise elastic/softening constitutive properties are incorporated as an example. Certain classical extremum principles are recovered as special cases of the general mixed formulation. Also, the structural optimization problem of ‘design for maximum strength’ is formulated as a direct extension of the extremum principle for analysis. The effect on design of material degradation (softening) is observed through a set of numerical results for optimal truss configurations.
