Effect of salt solutions on concrete during alternate wetting and drying
Conclusions 1. Laboratory investigations established that under the effect of salt solutions and tap water on concrete during its alternating wetting and drying under positive temperatures there occurs a temporary increase in strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity during filling of pores and crystallization of salts in than. The temporary increase in strength and modulus of elasticity in our experiments for the concrete grades used was recorded up to 270–330 days, after which a decrease occurred. At an age of 1095 days the values of the characteristics were close to the values at an age of 28 days. 2. During alternating wetting and drying concrete under conditions of positive temperatures is corroded both in salt solutions and in ordinary tap water, which in the case of alternating wetting and drying of concrete is to a certain extent a corrosive environment for it. 3. The degree of corrosion of concrete increases with increase in the concentration of the corrosive medium. 4. In a variable water level, where wetting and drying of the surface occur, the process of corrosion of concrete with subsequent destruction can occur also without marked temperature differences. Therefore, the zone of structures in the variable water level should be made of high-strength concrete.
