The Urban Renaissance of the Third Millennium
Abstract This chapter highlights models and actions for urban renaissance, a major aim for cities striving for sustainable development. Land-use planning and transport are fundamental and interrelated instruments for the sustainable regeneration of cities, of their physical parts and of their extraordinary diversity. Many cities have demonstrated that the intensification and consolidation of the urban fabric can prevent uncontrolled urban sprawl. Harbour cities face special challenges and many urban waterfronts are undergoing or have undergone radical change.
