(Re)Construction of Community - Exploring the Possibilities of Community Participation in Architectural Education
Different perspectives necessitate global alliances to address the unsustainability of social systems, culture, and environment. Movements advocating for change, inclusivity, and a fairer society emphasize the interconnectedness of social issues and the importance of collective action. Due to unmet needs and limited systemic solutions, a discussion around “unity” and “commons” arises as alternatives to state withdrawal from education, housing, healthcare, childcare, the elderly, and vulnerable groups. The proposal addresses unmet needs and worsening conditions through collaboration, cooperation, and participation. In between the tensions of the contemporary context, architects play a crucial role in advancing designing towards a regenerative and redistributive economy based on commons. We must change education to improve conditions for the everyday, ordinary, community, or scarcity. In strengthening the micro-social forms of community, continuing the previous forms of cooperation in their regeneration, reconstruction, and adaptation is crucial for sustainability. By researching the possibilities of reconstruction and adaptation of existing forms of citizen participation in spatial and organizational form - local communities, the possibilities of using social heritage with the most efficient improvement forms are considered. By analyzing the case of the Community Architecture Studio and user participation in the community center Trg Heroja, a socialist housing settlement in Sarajevo, this study examines the planned development of social space and possibilities of community engagement in architecture. This emphasis on collective action is intended to inspire students to recognize their potential impact and motivate them to participate in the necessary changes in the production of space.
