Developing a Framework for Green Building Assessment of Existing Buildings in Kerala Using BIM
This research offers a theoretical and practical framework for evaluating the performance of existing buildings in Kerala based on BIM for green buildings. Some of the research activities included the comparison of the various green building standards, a simulation of the performance of multi-storeyed buildings, and a few critical factors that affect the assessment of green buildings. A real building, Forum Mall was sketched, and captured in Revit, and its simulation for energy efficiency was analyzed in Insight. A survey was done whereby participants were presented with 25 questions that asked them to describe factors that affect the sustainability of a building. The questionnaire data that were collected were analyzed using the statistical package known as SPSS after which the following 11 factors were determined to be the critical success factors. Some of these features, such as lighting systems with natural light, the building orientation, measures to prevent the emission of carbon, recycling systems of greywater, and location near centers of public transport, were improved to increase the building performance to gain the best possible green rating. The study finally afforded the development of a green building guideline for existing buildings in the context of Kerala which acted as a compass for the subsequent environmental and resource stocks improvement activities in the built environment of the state.
