Innovative Approach to Building-Scale Wastewater Reuse

This chapter focuses on opportunities to treat wastewater for onsite reuse. One promising approach is the use of onsite water treatment systems to collect and treat alternative water sources including wastewater for non-potable uses in buildings. With futuristic vision, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) piloted one of the first building-scale direct potable reuse demonstration projects in the USA. The goal of this chapter is to provide background information on research and technology advances in onsite building-scale water reuse including potable reuse. Lessons learned from the PureWaterSF project (potable reuse of wastewater) are discussed to help inform a broader dialog on purified water use.
